The Board

Julian Kyula is a Founder and Director of MODE. Julian’s experience spans over 15 years in the area of financial inclusion, data analytics, and starting similar companies that handle data in various parts of the globe.
Prior to MODE, Julian founded Quest Holdings – Kenya’s Debt Management company.
From 2001 to 2004 he worked with Alegis Group in Houston, Texas, doing data analytics on potential borrowers.

Josphat Kinyua is a Founder and Director at MODE. Josphat has more than 10 years of experience in investment banking, private equity and corporate finance. He worked at Renaissance Group as a Director of Renaissance Partners Africa for 8 years and at Standard Bank of South Africa. He holds a Master’s degree in Real Estate Development and Finance from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Nairobi.

Chris Baxter is a Founding MODE shareholder and non executive Chairman of the MODE Board since 2010.
From September 2012 to May 2015 Chris has been the Senior Vice President, Head of Investment Portfolio and Member of the Management Board at AFK Sistema in Moscow, Russia.
Prior to that, he was the CEO of Renaissance Partners principal investment business at Renaissance Group, from 2009 to 2012 and CEO and Head of Renaissance Investment Banking business from 2003 to 2008.
Chris worked at Merrill Lynch in London for 8 years, finishing in 2003 as Managing Director and Head of the Energy and Power sector team. From September 1987 to December 1995 Chris specialised in Energy Project Finance and Mergers and Acquisition advisory work at Chase Manhattan Bank in London.

Adel Kambar is a Director and Founding Board Member of MODE.
Adel has 20 years of experience in investing and capital markets financing across emerging markets. Adel was a partner at Renaissance Capital and CEO of Central Asia and prior to that held senior leadership positions at several top-tier global investment banks. Adel holds Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering with Management from University College, London.

Bruce McInroy is a Partner at Novator Partners L.L.P. He joined the firm in early 2004 and concentrates on investments in the telecommunications and technology sectors. Prior to Novator, he worked in investment banking at Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch, gaining wide-ranging experience in the telecom and technology sectors, and before that in industry with BT.

Shobna Juwaheer has more than 25 years’ experience in company secretarial and administration services. She worked for 7 years as Senior Consultant in the offshore department of PricewaterhouseCoopers Mauritius and 6 years as Consultant in the offshore department of KPMG Mauritius. Shobna Juwaheer acts as director on the board of several Global Business companies and funds.

Mahen Govinda is an engineering graduate and holds Masters degrees in telecommunications and in business process re-engineering. In the past, he has held senior positions at the National Computer Board and at the University of Mauritius.
Mahen Govinda was a Director in the International Business Services division of the Mauritius Board of Investment. Mahen Govinda serves as director on the board of a number of Global Business companies.

The Management Team

With 16 years’ experience in the Telecommunications industry, Shatse Kakwagh is a foremost Managed Services professional. He has managed significant telecoms operations, big multi-country change programs and outsourcing sales engagements.

He has a Bachelor of  Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and holds a Six Sigma qualification.

Shatse has managed several major telecoms operations in West Africa – including being the Chief Operating Officer; Airtel Managed Services and the Country Manager for Ericsson, Chad and Niger respectively. During this time, he was responsible for Government and Industry relations, and accountable for the delivery of the Managed Services Contract.

Most recently, he served as the Chief Operating Officer of Internet Solutions (a Dimension Data Subsidiary), in Nigeria where he developed a framework for profitable implementation of the company growth strategy and operations governance, improved service provisioning time, and maintained a high customer satisfaction rating while implementing an organizational transformation program.

Costa Tripodis is the Co-CEO and CFO at MODE.  He has  nearly 30 years of industry and advisory experience in Corporate Finance, strategy and operations improvement, IPO’s, M&A and capital raising across a wide range of sectors, including Information and Communications Technology, Oil and Gas, Infrastructure and Real Estate development, FMCG and Agriculture. Costa has worked on diverse projects in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Prior to joining MODE, he held the position of CFO at Dimension Data’s Internet Services division in Nigeria.
Costa is a qualified accountant and  holds an MBA degree in Finance from Edinburgh Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Economics and Tax from the University of Port Elizabeth. He also holds an Advanced Diploma in International Tax.

Muthoni Kirumbi is the IT Director at MODE.
Muthoni has over 7 years of successful experience in software development.
She joined MODE back in 2011 and serves as an IT Director – establishing the Company’s technical vision and leading all aspects of technology development, according to the strategic direction and growth objectives.
Prior to MODE Muthoni was part of the Software Development team at Nokia Research Center.
She holds Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi.

Sarah Buyaki is a multi-skilled professional with over 10 years’ experience in Human Resources and has extensive knowledge of working practices, recruitment, pay, conditions of employment and diversity issues. Sarah has worked in different sectors including Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering & Construction, Hospitality and FMCG.

Sarah Holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Africa Nazarene University and a Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Kenya institute of Management. She is a Certified Pension Trustee and a Member of Institute of Human Resource Management Kenya.

Lukas Harustiak is a Head of Corporate Finance at MODE. He has extensive experience in Investment Banking and Investment Management.
Before joining MODE, Lukas held position of Investment Director at Valiance, an investment firm in London. Prior to that he spent several years with RBS, working in London and Moscow.
Lukas holds Master’s degrees in Management and Finance from ESCP Europe in Paris and University of Economics in Bratislava. He is also a Master in Fine Arts from Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.

Mercy Kithenya is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 10 years of experience, specialising in Corporate, Commercial and Intellectual Property Law. She advises on various legal and regulatory aspects affecting Mode in the various jurisdictions of operation. She has handled a variety of transactions including debt and corporate structuring, banking and finance, foreign direct investments and corporate governance. Mercy holds an LL.B Degree and a MBA in Strategic Management.

Michael Mwachinga is the Finance Director at MODE. He is the member of Executive Committee supporting the Group operations. Michael has been with the company since its inception in 2010. Michael is an experienced professional in International Financial Reporting with deep knowledge of key Africa countries aspects.
Prior to joining MODE Michael worked with the Quest Holdings (a Debt Management company) as a General Finance Manager.
Michael holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Business Administration and Management from Daystar University in Nairobi.
